🐒 THE TURTLES OF TULUM 🐒

The experience is unique:

You wake up at midnight and look out the window.

There isn’t much moonlight, and it’s hard to see anything, but you sense something moving…

Suddenly… you see something incredible!

You rub your eyes, you thinkΒ  you’re dreaming…

…Even though the night is dark, you see it right there, on the sand, moving slowly…

Β

And it’s coming towards your cabin!!!

Β

Oh my God, how exciting!

Β

Without making any noise or turning on any lights, we watch in awe.

Β

We couldn’t see her digging the nest because we would have disturbed her if we had gone out, so we waited for her to finish and watched her return to the water.

Β

She must have left around 200 eggs under our cabin.

In the Riviera Maya, turtles nest between May and September.

We went in early July 2013.

The year this project began.

When I reinvented myself.

And we encountered that unexpected “gift.”

If you go, try to go during that time frame.

And especially if you see them at night, don’t even think about taking flash photos!

During the day, it’s difficult to spot them… the only thing you can photograph is the trail they leave in the sand, just like we did.

Don’t they look like tractor tracks? 🚜

You can also go swimming with turtles in Akumal, an absolutely idyllic natural environment with white sand and transparent water.

And speaking of 🐒… another day, I’ll tell you about how we ended up at “La casa de las tortugas,” a small hotel in Isla Holbox.

Another incredible place.

More wonderful memories.

…And you?

Have you been to Mexico?

It’s a fascinating country.

Full of contrasts.

Hugs,

Teresa 🌺

P.S. 1: Another great experience must be seeing them hatch from their shells! Makes you want to go… But you know I’m not a fan of going back to places where I’ve been particularly happy. There’s so much world out there! I’d rather cherish the memories…

P.S. 2: If you’re caught up in a life of maximum stress, endless workdays, little rest, and many responsibilities, either take a break from time to time and go on a trip that disrupts your routine a bit or you’ll explode πŸ’₯

Discover our hand-carved turtle in mother-of-pearl.

We don’t have any from Tulum. Ohana Marbella didn’t exist yet, and I don’t think it will return.

From Tahiti, yes.
