In January 2017, I travelled for the first time with my three children.
Alone, I mean. Just the three of them and me.
No parents, no grandparents, no cousins or aunts.
And we decided to go to a country that stole my heart from the moment I first set foot in it: Kenya. 🇰🇪
It’s so important to our family that I even named my daughter after it — Kenya, with a y.
One of the animals that has always fascinated me is the giraffe.
So elegant, so tall, with that distinctive neck… and so peaceful by nature. I don’t know, they just give me a sense of calm.
We loved visiting the Giraffe Centre – a giraffe orphanage working to prevent the extinction of the Rothschild’s giraffe, the only species born with five ossicones (two on top of the head, one on the forehead, and two behind the ears). It’s located about 40 km from central Nairobi.
Besides learning interesting facts like that, we also had the chance to feed them directly from our hands and discover more about their way of life and natural habitat.
What we couldn’t do — because it was completely beyond our budget — was stay at Giraffe Manor: an ultra-exclusive hotel where, if you pay a small fortune, magical things might happen… like a giraffe poking its long neck through your bedroom window if you leave it open, or stealing bread right off your breakfast table.
That’s why when Gloria — a wonderful Colombian artisan who makes beautiful accessories — showed me this pair of earrings, I didn’t hesitate:
“They’ve got personality,” I said.
“I love giraffes. Send them over!”
When it comes to aesthetics and fashion, there are as many tastes and opinions as there are colours.
Because everyone is free to dress however they like — even to wear giraffes on their ears.
What is true, though, is that if you wear something bold, it’s because you know how to pull it off.
With confidence and self-assurance.
As long as you're not disturbing the peace… like, say, wearing a flowerpot on your head.
Although sometimes appearances can be deceiving. The one who seems all quiet and timid can actually be quite daring in certain situations… and the one who looks super bold might turn out to be a bit of a coward.
You can tell certain things about people from how they dress — like what “tribe” they belong to. (And I don’t just mean indigenous tribes — I’m talking mostly about urban ones.)
When you hear someone criticising another person for how they look… don’t trust them!
Judging might be free, but it’s not exactly classy.
Who knows what each person is going through in life, why they dress the way they do, or what they’re trying to express through their style?
Doesn’t your mood affect the way you dress?
When I’m feeling low, I usually wear black.
And when I’m feeling euphoric or happy because something went well, I go for something a bit edgier.
So that’s the thing: if you feel like walking down the street with a pair of giraffes on your ears… who’s going to stop you? 🦒
Whether you’re a giraffe lover or not… just look how fabulous these are — you might be tempted!
And if they’re not your style, just check out all the other earrings we’ve got in the ACCESSORIES section!
Let’s see those giraffes!
Big hug,
Teresa 🌺
P.S. Giraffe Manor is just 13 minutes away from Karen Blixen’s house.
If you don’t know who she is… you might have missed one of the most iconic films in classic cinema.
And that’s a sin.
P.S. 2: Giraffes are wise creatures…
They say you don’t get the leaves unless you stretch your neck. 🍃
P.S. 3: I want to take more trips with my three children.
Selfishly, just the four of us: the three of them and me.
